Vigan is one of the few remaining Hispanic/Spanish towns in the Philippines. It has been built in the 16th century and was formerly called Villa Fernandina. Until today, it still preserved its timeless beauty showcasing the Spanish-era Philippines. Today, you can enjoy the cobblestone streets, calesa rides around town, and ancestral houses that survived the war until this day.
In 1999, it was included in UNESCO’s World Heritage Site list as a best-preserved example of a Spanish colonial town in Asia. The current Vigan is now a mix of old and new, of east and west, and of what used to be traditional and what’s modern now.

From Laoag to Vigan
1. From Laoag, ride an RCJ Bus Line or F. Franco Transit bus heading to Manila.
2. Drop by Vigan when you’re at Ilocos Sur.
3. Ride a tricycle to get dropped to the actual historic city of Vigan.
From Manila to Vigan
1. From Manila, ride either of the following bus lines: Partas, Dominion Bus, Aniceto Bus, or Viron Transit.
2. Ask to be dropped off at Vigan itself.
3. Ride a tricycle heading to the actual Vigan site.
Things to do at Vigan
1. VISIT BALUARTE
– This fortress of the governor features a mini zoo inside and a free ride to ponies.
2. TRY POTTERY
– Vigan’s Pagburnayan makes burnay jars that are fire-blasted in a huge kiln.
3. RIDE A CALESA
– You’re at one of the world’s UNESCO Heritage Site – don’t pass up on riding a horse-drawn carriage to get around.
4. WATCH ABEL WEAVING
– Local artisans have a show of Abel Weaving.
5. SEE THE VIEW
– Climb the belfry of the St. Augustine Church to see the town in an aerial view.
6. AVAIL THE HERITAGE RIVER TOUR
– Its main base can be found at Celedonia Garden in Beddeng Laud.
7. VISIT PLAZA BURGOS
– There are popular snack stands lining up Vigan’s Plaza Burgos, they feature the following local treats: sinanglao, arroz caldo, miki, empanada, and okoy.

To bring when visiting Vigan
1. Bring a lot of extra power banks and batteries.
2. Bring an extra set of clothes.
3. Bring a trash bag to collect your garbage while on your trip.
Reminders when visiting Vigan
1. The best time to visit is during the dry season November to May.
2. ATMs are in the town and most establishments accept credit card payments.
3. There is a very strong mobile signal for local networks.
